Adult Services

The Rainbow Centre helps you to take back some control and increase the quality of your life – you, not your condition, are in charge.

A neurological disorder affects automatic and voluntary movements and, as a result of this, people who have conditions such as Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke or Head Injuries can find it difficult to maintain the abilities they had before.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy, as a neurological condition, is non-progressive. However, people with cerebral palsy will face increasing challenges as they move through their lives.

Each new skill has to be consciously learned. Due to the nature of the condition, children and adults find it very difficult to apply skills from one situation to another. This can cause them to experience failure but with the appropriate input, they can enjoy success.

As a child moves towards adulthood, this input becomes increasingly important. Just as in childhood, we have to teach adults how to adapt their movement to their adult bodies. If adults are taught how to control and understand their bodies, they will be able to continue to develop skills throughout their lives.

Conductive Education sessions aim to teach the followings:

  • Improving body awareness, posture and co-ordination
  • Increasing spatial awareness
  • Increasing level of skills in everyday activities e.g. getting in/out of bed, dressing, eating and moving around the house
  • Learning how to move from a relaxed position
  • Learning how to isolate movements of the body with increased precision of fine movements

All sessions take place in small groups, maximum of 6 people and each group is diagnosis specific. We also offer support to carers/families as we feel that this is just as important.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common conditions, which causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body whereby an abnormal response by the body’s immune system is
directed against the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).

Signs and symptoms of MS vary widely and depend on which nerves are affected and the amount of nerve damage.

At present there is no cure but it is important to learn how to manage MS and its symptoms.

Conductive Education (CE) can help you to achieve and maintain an optimal level of movement and quality of life by teaching new strategies and skills, e.g.

  • To have more control over movements
  • To manage fatigue
  • To manage daily activities
  • To improve confidence and independence
  • To find solutions to the problems you face

All sessions take place in small groups, maximum of 6 people, and each group is offering a programme specifically devised for the condition. We also offer support to carers/families as we feel that this is just as important.

Parkinson's

Parkinson’s is a long-term, progressive neurological condition, associated with the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells (neurons) deep inside the brain. The level of progression will vary from person to person.

Parkinson’s is an incurable condition and whilst living with it is challenging, Conductive Education helps you to find the positive outlook and the self-confidence you need to manage your condition.

At the Rainbow Centre we aim to teach you how to control the Parkinson’s symptoms as well as preventing new ones such as:

  • Tremor
  • Rigidity (stiffness),
  • Slowness of movement (bradykinesia),
  • Balance problems
  • Problems with posture (particularly a tendency to stoop forwards)
  • Fine motor skills
  • Speech/facial expressions

All sessions take place in small groups, maximum of 6 people and each group is diagnosis specific. We also offer support to carers/families as we feel that this is just as important.

Stroke

A stroke occurs when a part of the brain is damaged either by lack of blood supply or bleeding. Stroke is a leading cause of disability and it can be life-changing.

After discharge from the hospital and/or completing a short period of therapy at home people who have had a stroke might have been told
that there is no possibility of further improving the control over their
movements and quality of their life at the Rainbow Centre believe that each person has the potential to improve from any stage. It is important
to learn skills to take back control of your life.

Conductive Education sessions support you physically and emotionally following your stroke to help you regain:

  • Independence
  • Social and daily living skills
  • Confidence
  • Increased overall awareness and range of movements
  • More control over affected side
  • Increased quality of speech, if necessary

All sessions take place in small groups, maximum of 6 people and each group is diagnosis specific. We also offer support to carers/families as we feel that this is just as important.
